The objective of the Vanderbilt Finance Leadership Program is to develop and strengthen the pipeline from Vanderbilt to competitive careers in finance. We hope to do this by introducing interested freshmen and sophomores to the financial services industry through an intensive and competitive program. The program is designed to familiarize participants with different roles in finance both on the buy-side and the sell-side, and to educate the participants in the expectations/requirements of different fields in finance prior to formally entering the recruitment process. 

The participants: 

Each year our organization takes on a cohort of roughly 30 sophomores selected by
the FDP Program Directors in conjunction with the Career Center on the basis of strong potential for professional success.

Participants' academic excellence:

Median Cumulative & Major GPA: 3.9/4.0

Median ACT Composite Score: 35                    

Median SAT Composite Score: 1520

Median SAT Math: 800

Other Summary Statistics:

  • 8 Majors represented; 13 Minors represented

  • Roughly 1/3rd of the FDP class is female

  • 80% have had a business-related internship

  • 60% have had a financial services internship

  • 37% speak more than one language fluently

Our Rigorous Technical Training:

Our organization meets every week to discuss current events in financial markets, learn important financial concepts in a classroom-like setting, and listen to occasional panels/guest speakers who volunteer their time to teach the participants of the program.
Our program also assigns weekly assignments that are due prior to the meeting and discussed as a group. Our curriculum covers different industries in financial services, basic Excel/PowerPoint skills, accounting/valuation concepts, fundamental stock analysis, and market analysis. Four weeks into the program, our participants indicate their “industry of choice”, and assignments are tailored to their selected industries.
